Duncan Graham BVSc BSc (Hons)
Picture
Duncan graduated from Massey University in 1984, and worked in several North Island clinics. In 1988 he became a partner in the Halifax Veterinary Clinic, in Nelson, New Zealand . In 1992-93, Duncan spent a year in the US, studying  the dermatology of companion animals and attended lectures and clinics at both Cornell University, New York state and the University of California Davis campus, as these two veterinary schools have  leading dermatologists.
Duncan also sat and passed the California veterinary board exams, which meant that he was licensed to work in California. Duncan was able to get an interim resident position at a very busy private dermatology practice in Southern California, working under the supervision of Drs. Wayne Rosenkrantz and Craig Griffin. This experience was invaluable; not only are Craig and Wayne recognized internationally as leaders in dermatology, Duncan dealt with challenging skin cases that saw him take sole responsibility from first presentation.

After returning to Nelson in 1993, with encouragement from Sylvia McLean, Duncan began making dermatology trips to Christchurch, seeing cases at Sylvia’s St Martins clinic. Later that year, Duncan began making trips to the Lower Hutt Animal Hospital. Eventually Dunedin was added to the mix (working out of the MorningtonVeterinary Clinic), and finally Palmerston North, working out of the Central City Clinic, now Pet Doctors Palmerston North. At various times, Duncan has been hosted by the Elles Road Clinic in Invercargill, Animal Care in Havelock North, and Aorangi Highfield in Timaru.

In 2001, Duncan left general practice to concentrate solely on companion animal skin disease, its diagnosis and treatment.

Duncan brings more than fifteen years’ experience of handling dermatology only cases, covering all areas of companion animal dermatology, especially dog and cat allergies. Duncan’s interests in dermatology include acute and chronic otitis externa, especially Pseudomonas otitis, intradermal testing of dogs and feline skin disease.  Duncan is a veterinarian with a particular interest in dermatology.  He is not a specialist dermatologist.  The only permanent registered specialist dermatologist in New Zealand is Debbie Simpson who practices in Auckland, and does dermatological referrals in the upper North Island, including Hamilton. Her email address is dermvet.be

Duncan is married to Anna, with three lovely girls to boast about, none of them interested in a career in veterinary dermatology.  However one daughter has done an art installation based on the lesions of various “itchy dogs.”  All four women in his life have supported his “itchy dog” tours around the South Island.  They have a Border collie named Chico, and 2 cats. The hens have been retired. These creatures too seem uninterested in the fascinating field of veterinary dermatology.
