DUNCAN GRAHAM BVSc BSc (HONS)
VETERINARY DERMATOLOGIST
After graduating from Massey in 1984, Duncan worked in general practice in Auckland for the next 4 years. Then, in 1988, he moved to Nelson to become a partner in the Halifax Veterinary Clinic. Developing an interest in dermatology, in 1992-93, Duncan and his small family spent a year crisscrossing the US, studying the dermatology of companion animals, principally at two leading veterinary schools, Davis and Cornell. Then, for the last 5 months of that year, he worked as an interim resident under Dr Wayne Rosenkrantz in a busy private dermatology practice in Southern California.
When he returned to Nelson in 1993, Duncan did dermatology referral work throughout the South Island and lower North Island, in addition to general practice. Often family holidays were part of an “Itchy Dog Trip”. Duncan left general practice in 2001 to focus on companion animal skin disease: its diagnosis and treatment. He set up Animal Dermatology NZ at that time. Since he and his family call Nelson home, this meant a great deal of travel: to Invercargill, Queenstown, Christchurch, Timaru, Wellington, Napier and Palmerston North, as well as to Nelson. Over the past 10 years, as the referrals in Wellington increased, Duncan reduced his travelling to concentrate on that city’s companion animal skin problems.
Duncan brings over twenty years of experience in focusing on dermatology cases. This means that he has personally seen most types of skin problems that companion animals can come up with. He covers all areas of companion animal dermatology, especially dog and cat allergies. As well as allergies, Duncan’s interests in dermatology include acute and chronic otitis externa (ear disease), especially Pseudomonas otitis, intradermal testing of dogs for environmental allergies and feline skin disease.
Duncan is a veterinarian with a particular interest in dermatology. He is not a specialist dermatologist.
In his non-clinical time, Duncan enjoys supporting his wife Anna’s passion for tramping, keeping tabs on the movements of his three daughters, not walking his border collie Chico, leaving that to Chico’s large fan club, reading history and listening to protest songs.

GINA SHARLAND
PRACTICE MANAGER
Gina is the Office Manager for Animal Dermatology NZ and the main driving cog of ADNZ. She loves seeing your animal profile pictures and being able to match faces to names. With a background in veterinary nursing, Gina began working with Duncan at the Halifax Veterinary Clinic 30 years ago and is now used to his "funny ways".
As the Office Manager, her job is not easy, as she covers a broad range of functions, including organizing Duncan and keeping things running smoothly. She is the key person for updating appointments, responding to inquiries, making new appointments, processing payments, making-up immunology vaccines and sending off medications. She is also responsible for updating the website, solving all IT issues, and balancing accounts. Office Manager, indeed!
Gina lives in Nelson, her home town, with two teenage sons and her 13-year-old dog Charlie. She enjoys dog walks, catching up with family and friends and camping at Quinney’s Bush.

ROSHNI WILLIAMS
DERMATOLOGY ASSISTANT
Roshni is Duncan’s dermatology assistant in Wellington. She started working with Duncan in 2019 when he moved the referral consulting base to Pet Doctors Thorndon. As Duncan's dedicated assistant, during the consultation Roshni does many things (restraining pets, helping with the physical exam, processing cytology, reading cytology, making up medication and keeping things tidy. Her greatest skill is in relaxing the animals and their owners in a potentially stressful situation. She does this by giving the animals heaps of treats and cuddles, and greeting the owners with a smile and genuine warmth.
Roshni came to vet nursing after 18 years as a dental assistant. According to Roshni, her love for the puppies led her to vet nursing. But we know it was for any available animal cuddles. Sometimes, she even neglects her two teenage children to look after her highly intelligent rescue greyhound and two cats. In her spare time, she is involved with true crime podcasts, following www.Badspace comics and avoiding weeding the garden. She supplies the Tradescantia sample that Duncan uses to test for contact hypersensitivity.
